South Kerry tourism providers have welcomed the reopening of Skellig Michael to visitors on Sunday.
The Office of Public Works made the announcement today, following an assessment of the island, which is home to one of Ireland’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
However, the OPW says it may close the island again at short notice, if an identifiable risk arises, in the interest of staff and public safety.
Gerard Kennedy of The Moorings in Portmagee says there’s a sense of relief locally that the island has reopened again for the coming season, anticipated to be one of its busiest.
The closing scenes for ‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’ were shot on the island last summer which has sparked huge interest in the area.
