Homecoming celebrations are planned in Listowel tonight to welcome home the victorious Tidy Towns committee.
The North Kerry town has been named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town at the annual Tidy Towns awards held today in the Helix in Dublin.
Letterkenny was the overall winner in this year’s competition as well as claiming the title of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
Kerry was well represented in this year’s competition.
In addition to Listowel, Tralee, Kenmare and Killarney all secured gold medals and Sneem won a silver medal.
Knightstown won bronze medal and Portmagee was highly commended in the Diversity Awards.
Kilgarvan Village was also listed for an Endeavour Award.
11-year-old Lucy Daly of Kenmare Tidy Towns Committee was highly commended with a SuperValu Junior Community Hero Award.
Diaspora Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Senator Ned O’Sullivan, who founded Listowel Tidy Towns Committee, and Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Pat McCarthy have congratulated all involved.
Mary Hanlon, who has been a volunteer with the Tidy Towns Committee for the past 22 years, says winning means everything.
