Irish Water has confirmed that fewer than half of the country’s households have paid their first water bills (46%).
The company collected 30.5 million of the 66.8 million euro it had issued in bills in the first three months of the year.
Irish Water says customer engagement was high during that time, with more than half a million calls made to its helpline. (540,000)
Opponents of the water charge claim the figures show their campaign is working.
Anti-austerity alliance TD Paul Murphy says it will be a central issue in the next election.
