Professor Niall Moyna is Head of the School of Health and Human Performance, and a member of the Centre for Preventive Medicine in DCU.
He was speaking at the Education and Training Boards Ireland conference at the Gleneagle Hotel, which was attended by almost 200 delegates.
Professor Niall Moyna believes students aren’t being taught the skills they need for lifelong learning – the transferrable skills of leadership, loyalty, and communication.
He says sport, particularly team sports can teach students about problem solving, the kind of skills that employers need and want.
Professor Moyna says students who play sports should be given bonus points in their Leaving Cert, and feels the CAO results reveal nothing about a student’s ability.
The DCU professor says student who partake in extra-curricular activities like sport and physical activity should be rewarded and not penalised.
