A Kerry sexual assault victim says a new support room opened in Tralee Courthouse provides a safe haven for witnesses.
The room was developed by the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre; it was given by the Courts Service and renovated using donations from individuals and businesses.
Up to now, there was no dedicated waiting space for survivors of sexual violence and vulnerable witnesses attending court cases; they were often in close proximity to their accused and supporters.
Kerry woman Deb Courtney went through the courts system seeking justice after her and her sister were the victims of sexual abuse; Deb’s case was heard in Dublin, where there’s a dedicated unit for victims.
She says this new support room in Tralee Courthouse provides a private space for victims; a place to be away from their perpetrators.
