A representative of the Travelling community in Kerry says parents can imprint the importance of education on their children.
However, Martin Mahon, who is vice chair of Kerry Travellers Health and Community Development Project, says this very much depends on individual families.
Mr Mahon says education is not important to some families who prefer to follow the traditions associated with the Traveller culture such as getting married and finding work.
He says Travellers continue to face a high level of discrimination in some shops, bars and schools.
