A Killarney woman who is the director of the Irish Traveller Movement says she is confident that Travellers will one day be designated as an ethnic group in Ireland.
Brigid Quilligan was responding to the defeat in the Dáil of a Sinn Féin bill which proposed to grant ethnicity to the Traveller community.
Brigid says that Travellers have a unique status in Irish society and they want that to be recognised.
She rejected suggestions that the wider Traveller community is responsible for the actions of a minority.
