A new Bill aimed at tackling the issue of ramming Garda cars, has been brought before the Dail by Kerry TD Brendan Griffin.
The South Kerry Fine Gael Deputy, wants those found guilty of this offence, to be jailed for ten years.
He says there were 244 instances of Garda vehicles being rammed between 2010 and 2013 – almost one per week.
Deputy Griffin’s Bill has already passed its first stage through the house, and he hopes to bring it to the second stage during the remaining term of this Dail.
He says Gardai must be protected in the course of carrying out their duties, and the existing laws don’t go far enough to protect them:
