Fianna Fail Deputy John Brassil comments follow the announcement yesterday by owner of the plant SSE Airtricity that it is seeking 11 voluntary redundancies.
This, the company says, is to keep the plant competitive ahead of a new integrated single electricity market next year.
However, Deputy Brassil believes the company is not focusing on Tarbert for the future as it has failed to develop a Combined Cycle Heat and Power Plant at the site for which it has planning permission:
Meanwhile, UNITE the union which represents some of the workers at the Tarbert power station says it was not contacted by SSE Airtricity ahead of the announcement.
Richie Browne from UNITE says this is a cause for concern and wants to explore if there are other ways for the plant to remain competitive:
