People already paying for water will have to get a payment reimbursement or tax rebate if water charges are scrapped.
That’s according to Kerry Independent TD Danny Healy Rae who spoke on the question of how water will be paid for if charges are done away with in the Dáil this week.
However it’s been mooted recently the cost of water provision may be recouped through general taxation or property charges.
Deputy Healy Rae said while there should be a waiver system in place for people who cannot pay, there is a cost to providing water and that question needs to be answered.
The TD, who’s expressed opposition to water charges in the past and to an increase in property tax, failed to outline his position as to how exactly water should be paid for.
