A Kerry TD has called for an alignment between the school calendar and that of the school bus transport scheme.
Many schools across the country will re-open as early as August 27th but the School Transport Scheme will not resume until August 31st.
The Department of Education says the starting date for school transport services is arrived at by reference to the standard school year and the requirement that second level schools be open for a minimum of 167 days.
Responding to a Dáil question from Deputy Martin Ferris, the department said the additional cost of providing school transport services before August 31st would be prohibitive.
