« BackKerry TD says budget offers no hope for Kerry’s broadband needs

A Kerry TD has said that Budget 2017 has failed rural communities across the county by not investing more in the roll out of the National Broadband Scheme.

An extra €5 million was allocated to finalise the tender process in 2017 and this brings the total allocation for the National Broadband Plan in 2017 to €15 million

Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil said that five million euro won’t help claw back the massive delays in the scheme and that we are already eight years behind the original 2015 target.

A delay in the procurement process means that work on the National Broadband Plan may not begin until 2018 which could lead to a completion date of 2023.

Commenting on the budget Mr Brassil said that if we want to support indigenous SMEs to grow, and expand, or to attract foreign investment into Kerry, we need access to a reliable, high-speed fibre-connected broadband service.
