A Kerry TD has made a call in the Dáil for rent supplement increases to be reviewed.

Earlier this month, Minister Leo Varadkar announced that an extra €15 million is to be spent on the payment this year to prevent more people losing their homes.

Over 1,600 (1,633) people in Kerry receive rent supplement; the new top level in the county for a single person is €380, €410 for a couple, and €575 for a couple and three children.

Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil says the increases in Kerry are minimal and unfair; he says other counties such as Galway received higher increases and their levels are now way beyond Kerry’s.

He raised the issue in the Dáil this week calling for it to be reviewed and changed immediately, but Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said the Department of Social Protection carried out a review, and the increases reflect the pressures on rental properties in each location.
