A Kerry TD says that low incomes in the fishing industry are contributing to exploitation and abuses in the sector.
Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris was condemning the revelations in The Guardian newspaper that there has been prolonged abuse and trafficking of workers in the fishing industry in Ireland.
The party spokesperson for fisheries says anyone involved in abuse of workers should be publicly named and shamed.
Deputy Ferris says long hours and working on a shared basis are also factors which contribute to the problem:
Ken Fleming of the International Transport Workers’ Federation disagreed with the suggestion that work on a shared basis is an excuse for the problem.
