« BackKerry TD claims measures on restricted sale of alcohol ‘unworkable’ for small retailers

A Kerry TD says comments he made comparing the proposed restricted sale of alcohol to snack foods were taken out of context.

A meeting of medical experts was tabled in Leinster House to discuss measures to restrict the sale of alcohol in shops – Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin was one of those in attendance.

It was reported Deputy Griffin asked the doctors, when drink was compared to cigarettes, “whether Mars bars, Maltesers or Tayto crisps would be hidden away next”.

Deputy Griffin said his reference to snack foods at the meeting was taken out of context.

He said he was defending the position of small retailers, who he claims would find it difficult to comply with some of the proposed restrictions – including selling alcohol from behind a curtain or in a partitioned area.

Deputy Griffin said he supports many of the measures included, but is seeking that Section 20 of the proposed bill be amended.
