Fishermen should be provided with some sort of support, similar to what is being provided to small farmers.
That’s according to Kerry TD Martin Ferris who says there is scope for a Single Boat Payment scheme to be funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
The Sinn Féin party spokesperson on fisheries has travelled to Brussels to speak on the issue.
Last Friday he was a guest speaker at the Defence and Protection of Small Scale, Artisanal and Coastal Fishing Conference at the EU Parliament.
Deputy Ferris says with technological improvements come ever-increasing costs and increasing demands to remain viable – the burden of which, he says, cannot be wholly sustained by fishermen and women.
