The EU Comission has agreed the content of health certificates for the export of breeding, production and slaughter cattle to Turkey and talks are underway between the Department of Agriculture and the Turkish Central Competent Authority on export trade agreements.

Irish beef prices have been strong this year but with the end of dairy quotas and expansion in herds, there is widespread belief that new beef markets need to be found.

Turkey has a population of 78 million and Senator Sheahan says the exportation of 50,000 head of cattle to Turkey is achievable.
