A Kerry Senator says the Health Minister is mismanaging his portfolio.
Fianna Fail’s Mark Daly hit out at Leo Varadkar over unopened beds in Kenmare Community Hospital and the ambulance service in Kerry. The 40 bed Kenmare Community Nursing Unit was opened in 2013 at a cost of eight million euro. However, 21 beds on the top floor of the unit still remain closed. Minister Leo Varadkar says a review of the scheme for those needing long-term residential beds is currently underway to consider its long term viability and to see if it needs to be changed to reflect older people’s wants. A review is also underway into Kerry’s Community Hospitals with a final report on Kenmare being available at the end of the month. Senator Mark Daly says 800 people are in acute hospital beds around the country that would prefer to be in facilities such as Kenmare which would also help free up much need hospital beds:
