« BackKerry Senator calls on Taoiseach to intervene in Halawa case

Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly from Kenmare A Kerry Senator is urging the Taoiseach to intervene in a situation that has seen an Irish Citizen in prison in Egypt for over 800 days.

Ibrahim Halawa faces his 13th trial in Egyptian court tomorrow and Senator Mark Daly a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade has called on the Taoiseach to intervene in the same way as the Australian Prime Minister,whose intervention secured the release of Peter Greste.

According to Senator Daly, Amnesty International has conducted a thorough investigation of the case and determined that Ibrahim is innocent of all charges.

The Kenmare Senator said that more needs to be done and we need to follow the example of the Australian government and ask for Ibrahim’s release by Presidential decree as occurred with Greste following sustained representation by its Prime Minister.
