« BackKerry nursing union rep says nursing home beds an issue in ED overcrowding

A senior nursing union leader from west Kerry says that the issue of capacity at community hospitals is contributing to a backlog in general hospitals and emergency departments.

Phil Ní Sheaghdha of the Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation was speaking ahead of a possible ballot of nurses for strike action because of overcrowding in emergency departments.

She says that unless the situation improves ahead of the expected busy winter period in hospitals, nurses will be forced to strike.

Phil Ní Sheaghdha says that the union has a number of ideas which they would like to put to hospital managers in discussions which she says are required.
