A Kerry Fine Gael senator is defending his call for more pay for councillors.
Senator Tom Sheahan says councillors’ workloads have increased drastically since 2014 with little or no additional resources provided to members of local government.
Senator Sheahan has asked the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to recognise the additional workload of county councilors since the enactment of the Local Government Reform Act.
The senator fears that without the adequate help and resources being provided to councillors, the calibre of candidate will be decimated.
He says being a councillor in Ireland is a full time job where one works weekends, for part time pay.
