A Fianna Fáil senator from Kerry says  he hopes his party would run a candidate to contest the Presidential election.

Senator Ned O'Sullivan

Ned O’Sullivan from Listowel says there’s a campaign to have President Michael D Higgins re-elected unopposed, citing recent statements by Minister Leo Varadkar and some Labour TDs.

He says there should be a Presidential election and called on President Higgins to clarify his position.

In the past, the President, who was elected in 2011 to serve a seven year term,  had indicated that he would not seek re-election.
