A Kerry delegate to the Fianna Fáil National Executive says it’s disappointing allegations concerning former minister Pat Carey have made their way to the media before due course had been completed.
Fionnán Fitzgerald from Ballymacelligott said Kerry Fianna Fáil members have been ‘shocked’ by the allegations, given Mr Carey’s record and service to the party and the country.
The Keel native, who served as a TD for Dublin North West, announced he is to step down as Director of Elections for Fianna Fáil.
In a statement released through his solicitors last night, Mr Carey says he doesn’t know if allegations about sexual abuse carried in the Irish Independent this week relate to him.
However he says given the unfounded speculation that has arisen, he is resigning from a number of positions and charities he is involved with.
Mr Fitzgerald said he found Mr Carey to be a very genuine man who did good at all times.
