The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council will host a Civic Reception to welcome the 2015 Rose Contestants at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, this afternoon. (2pm)
In welcoming the Roses from across the globe, Cathaoirleach Pat McCarthy says the Council has a long association with the Rose of Tralee International Festival and is proud to be a sponsor of this event.
Today will also see reigning Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh complete her marathon Trek to Tralee; she has run and cycled her way from her native Shurle, Co Mayo over the past number of days. The annual festival, which kicks off today, attracts 200,000 visitors to the town, contributing over €7m to the local economy.
This morning at half 11 the Mayor of Tralee Councillor Thomas McEllistrim will offically open the new Rose Walk in Tralee Town Park, which is dedicated to the memory of the 2011 Washington DC Rose, Dorothy Henggeler, who passed away in April last year. The new Rose Walk links the Riverside Walk at “Fels Point” to the Town Centre, leading visitors through the Rose Garden, and the many commemorations in the park to the Rose of Tralee. Kerry County Council will also host a Civic Reception for the Rose Centres in the Council Chamber in Aras An Chontae next Monday.
Chief Executive of Kerry County Council Moira Murrell welcomes the many visitors to the Festival and wishes all the Roses and their supporters an enjoyable week.
