Kerry County Council owns 136 vacant houses but there has been cuts to refurbishment grants to do them up.

Today’s Irish Times reports that local authorities have more than 2,600 vacant housing units but there have been cuts of €6.5m in refurbishment grants.

This means that this year’s funding will be around €8.5m compared to last year’s figure of €15m.

In 2014 Kerry County Council received €500,000 to upgrade 23 vacant houses in the county.

Fianna Fáil deputy Barry Cowen has said the cuts are ‘sickening’ given that social housing waiting lists are at historic highs.
