A Kerry County Councillor is calling for the reinstatement of the bereavement grant, saying the economy has recovered enough to facilitate this.
Independent Cllr Brendan Cronin made the call at the recent monthly meeting of the local authority.
The bereavement grant was cut in October 2013 in the Budget; it was worth €850 to help families with unexpected funeral costs.
Cllr Cronin’s motion was supported by other councillors, and the local authority is to write to the Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar.
Cllr Cronin says the bereavement grant can be very important for families on the margins:
