A councillor is criticising the need for community groups to show tax clearance in order to be eligible for the Kerry Community Support Fund.
Kerry County Council has just launched the 2016 fund, which offers €750,000 to community and voluntary groups around the county.
The money from the Kerry Community Support Fund can be used to enhance services and the appearance of communities, and the closing date for applications by groups is the 14th of April.
Under the eligibility criteria in the fund’s guidelines, community and voluntary groups applying are required to submit a tax clearance certificate.
At the monthly meeting of the council yesterday, Sinn Féin Councillor Toireasa Ferris called for the wording to the changed about a tax cert being required, saying it’s overly onerous on small community groups.
Kerry Chief Executive Moira Murrell says they’ll use discretion on this, but Councillor Ferris feels this should have been put in writing.
