« BackKerry ‘an industrial wasteland’ says Independent TD

A Kerry TD has told the Dáil that the county is an industrial wasteland which has been decimated in recent years.

Kerry TD Tom Fleming

Tom Fleming was speaking during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil when he urged the Taoiseach to address what he called the two-tier recovery in the country at present. Tom Fleming told the Dáil that half of all foreign direct investment companies in the country were located in the greater Dublin area. He said that employment growth in rural Ireland is practically nil and that Kerry is an industrial wasteland. Over 1,000 industrial visits supported by the IDA took place between 2013 and 2015, of which 561 were directly to Dublin. In contrast Kerry and Cork, had 83 visits, he said. Deputy Fleming asked Enda Kenny what he would do to give equal opportunity to the west coast and rural Ireland which has been decimated economically. Responding, the Taoiseach said indigenous Kerry companies Kerry Group and Dairymaster have expanded far beyond the county bounds. They have become international global companies, and this is where further growth was needed, he said.
