The Justice Minister says the Government has been extremely careful to stay within the budgetary framework guidelines.
The Fiscal Advisory Council has warned that Budget 2016 is too expansionary and the body will need to consider it further. Cuts to the Universal Social Charge, an increase in child benefit and the state pension and expanding GP care to children under 12 were some of the measures announced yesterday. Budget 2016 also announced that 600 more Gardai are to be trained. 550 officers are due to pass out from Templemore in the coming months. A surge in rural crime has put focus firmly back on the closure of rural Garda stations; twelve stations were closed in Kerry in recent years. However, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald believes the role of Gardai has to change:
