« BackJury calls for more testing of older tractors following death of Tralee man

A jury at Tralee Coroner’s Court has called for older tractors to be tested at least once a year in the interest of health and safety.
The rider follows an inquest into the death of a 53-year-old man, who was ejected from his tractor and then run over by the trailer.John Godley was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at Baheenaugh, Kieduff, Tralee on July 2nd, 2014.
He died from a blunt force chest trauma due to a tractor accident.
Maurice Godley, a brother of the deceased man, saw the accident occur on July 2nd last year.
He told the inquest his brother had been drawing turf from the bog and the trailer was full at the time the accident occurred. Mr Godley saw the tractor hit the ditch. He said his brother was lying underneath it and he stayed with him until the ambulance arrived.
Gda James O’Brien, a forensic collision investigator, told the inquest the tractor was travelling at a very low speed, in second gear, as Mr Godley had been negotiating a downhill section of the road.
He said the weight of the trailer had caused the tractor to “over-rev” itself and this pushed it down the hill. Gda O’Brien said the driver was ejected from the tractor and he was then over run by the trailer.
