A 20-year-old man who stole jewellery including a wedding and engagement ring from his foster mother has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Mark O’Callaghan with an address at 60 Ballyspillane, Killarney, was remanded in custody to appear before Killarney District Court again on February 2nd.
Mark O’Callaghan admitted stealing four rings and a chain from his foster mother with an estimated value of €4,000.
Killarney District Court heard the items were stolen on dates between October 21st and October 28th last, when the accused had access to the house. His solicitor Pádraig O’Connell described Mr O’Callaghan’s actions as a ‘mean-spirited theft’, fuelled by alcohol, but said he had made a full disclosure to gardai and had attempted, though unsuccessfully, to recover the items.
Mr O’Connell said his client felt ashamed and apologised for his actions.
Judge James O’Connor remanded him in custody to appear before the court again in February in relation to a public order incident in Ballyspillane on December 1st and December 2nd.
