Ireland South MEP Deidre Clune is urging the UN to work towards abolishing the death penalty.

She says over 2,400 people in 55 countries were sentenced to death in 2014.

Women were stoned to death for adultery in Pakistan, Nigeria, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Eight states still have the death penalty for homosexuality, while Iran reportedly executed 394 drug offenders in the first six months of 2014.

Belarus is the only UN Member State in Europe that still uses the death penalty.
