A 58-year-old Milltown man who was found dead inside his front gate died of hypothermia from being outside all night, an inquest heard.

The jury at the inquest into the death of Denis Brendan Counihan returned a verdict of death by misadventure.
Brendan Counihan of 7 Corpus Christi Terrace Milltown was found dead in his front garden by a neighbour on February 17th, 2016.

An inquest into his death at the South Kerry Coroner’s Court heard he also suffered from severe heart disease and an enlarged liver.

Mr Counihan had been out the previous night and was dropped home by a friend, who had noticed him lean against a pillar and thought he had dropped his keys.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Margot Bolster revealed several bruises to his hands and arms, consistent with trying to get up after a fall.

There was also a bruise to the back of his head, possibly caused by a fall.

Coroner Terence Casey paid tribute to the neighbour for his vigilance. He said only for him Mr Counihan could have laid there for considerably longer.
