« BackHSE cancelled ambulance for 81-year-old wheelchair bound Kerryman

An 81-year-old  man who’s confined to a wheelchair says he and his family were devastated when the HSE cancelled his ambulance at short notice.

Jim Scanlon from Listowel was due to be taken by ambulance to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire  last Tuesday.

Jim and Nora Scanlon, Dirrha East, Listowel.
Jim suffered life-changing injuries after a fall last year which have confined him to a wheelchair.

He had an appointment to see a consultant at the National Rehabilitation Hospital last Tuesday and because of the severity of his injuries could only be transported by ambulance.

An ambulance to take Jim to Dún Laoghaire was booked a month in advance.

However less than 24 hours before the scheduled trip, the ambulance service said Jim couldn’t be taken to Dublin due to ‘lack of resources.’

His appointment has been moved to October.

His wife Nora says she hopes there won’t be any further cancellations.
