Hoax calls and nuisance calls to Valentia Coastguard are on the rise, according to new figures.
It’s emerged that more 800 nuisance calls were made to the service so far this year, and a further 12 hoax calls were also recorded.
The most serious hoax call this year was made at the weekend, when a caller claimed that a yacht with several people on board was sinking off the Cork coast.
Valentia Coastguard tasked Ballycotton and Crosshaven lifeboats, as well as the Shannon Coastguard Helicopter and the Waterford Coastguard Helicopter.
Divisional Controller with Valentia Coastguard, John Draper, says these calls waste large sums of money, and it’s not always easy to track down those responsible.
Mr Draper says it’s hard to understand the mindset of those who make bogus calls:
