GRA Garda Representative AssociationThe spokesman for the Garda Representative Association in Kerry has praised the response of gardaí to the armed robbery of the post office in Waterville yesterday.

Two men, from Kerry, are continuing to be questioned following the armed raid.

The pair were arrested in Beaufort following a major manhunt – they are being held in Tralee and Killarney Garda Stations.

Two gardaí were injured when their vehicle was rammed while in pursuit of the suspects – they were taken to hospital but were later released.

Seamus Moriarty, Kerry GRA representative, said the courage of these gardaí was exemplary:

Garda Moriarty said Kerry gardaí are currently dependent on regional support units in Limerick and Cork for armed back-up.

He said the GRA would welcome the re-opening of rural garda stations which have closed across the county.

Following yesterday’s arrests, searches are continuing for a possible third suspect in the mid-Kerry area.

Officers are also combing the region for stolen money, items of post and for a firearm used by the raiders.
