Gardaí and diggers were engaged in a rescue mission with a difference today – to remove a 4 x 4 vehicle, and its occupant, seemingly stuck at the pier at Dún Chaoin.
The iconic pier – the subject of many postcards and an internationally recognised image associated with Kerry – is one of the main landing points for ferries to and from the Blasket Islands.
The man and his jeep were discovered by ferry operators this morning, wedged in at the bend leading down to the pier.
As a consequence, ferry operators, crew and indeed the many who had booked tours to the Blaskets, were unable to pass.
Dingle Gardaí arrived at the scene at around 11am and assisted in removing the man from the vehicle.
Diggers attended the scene shortly afterwards assisting in the removal of the vehicle which was tightly wedged at the bend.
Dingle Gardaí told Radio Kerry News, the vehicle has now been removed and ferry services are resuming.
