« BackFungi is on the mend and recovering well from suspected propeller gash

Water sport enthusiasts in Dingle Harbour have been asked to slow down and take extra care when approaching Fungi, the harbour’s resident dolphin.Fungi Jump


The warning comes following an injury sustained by the bottlenose dolphin yesterday, believed to have been caused by a boat’s propeller.

Dingle boatman, Jimmy Flannery, says while it’s not known what caused the gash on Fungi’s side, it is likely to have been a tear from a propeller.

But the mammal, who has made his home in Dingle for over 30 years, is reported to be on the mend.

Mr Flannery says the Dingle dolphin is in good spirits, in playful mood, and was feeding well this morning.

However, he warns that Fungi is getting older and although he’s well used to local boats, he might not be able to get away as quickly from faster machines if he gets into difficulty:
