A sitting Kerry TD says the sheer geography of the new five-seat Kerry constituency was among the reasons he has pulled out of the General Election campaign.
Independent Tom Fleming announced in recent days that he would not be seeking re-election.
The Scartaglen man broke away from Fianna Fail before the last General Election after he failed to be nominated.
He says he had not canvassed in North Kerry.
Deputy Fleming served over 30 years as a public representative and has paid tribute to his team of over 200 people:
Kerry Independent Alliance Cllr Michael Gleeson has not ruled out contesting the General Election in the wake of Tom Fleming’s withdrawal from the race.
However, Cllr Gleeson says due to the limited time left to canvas voters it is unlikely he will add his name to the ballot paper.
Cllr Gleeson says if Deputy Fleming had announced his decision earlier he would have thought about running.
Candidates have until midday on Thursday to declare if they are contesting the election.
