One of Kerry’s leading fisheries experts has called for a strandings unit to be based in the county.

Kevin Flannery said there is a need for the unit in Kerry to deal with the high number of whales that become beached off Brandon Bay and Tralee Bay.

Mr Flannery was involved in the operation yesterday to refloat three pilot whales that had got into difficulty on Gowlane Strand and later at Brandon Pier.

He said this summer alone, there have been six strandings along Kerry’s gold coast and the area is a black spot for these events.
