« BackEvents to mark laying of first working transatlantic cable from Kerry to Canada

Valentia Island road signEvents to mark the 150th anniversary of the laying of the first transatlantic cable from south Kerry to Canada begin today.

The laying of the cable from Valentia to Newfoundland got underway on this day in 1866 and took two weeks to complete.

The cable meant easier communication between Europe and America.

For the rest of the week there will be lectures, walks, cycles, a book launch and fireworks display in Valentia to mark the historic event.
