The busbar fault happened at the ESB’s main transmission station at Laharn, on the Listowel road in Tralee, just after 9 o’clock, and knocked out power to Tralee and Killarney towns, west Kerry, and south Kerry.

While power has since been restored, ESB Kerry area manager Ger Deenihan says it was a major fault so an investigation will be carried out.

He also says a lot of work will have to be carried out on equipment in the coming days.

Ger Deenihan says such a major fault rarely happens, and thankfully no one was injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, patient care at University Hospital Kerry and the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee was unaffected by this morning’s power outage; both facilities have back-up systems in place in case of power cuts.
