An elderly Tralee lady had the money she was saving for Christmas taken from her home last Friday.
The woman, living in Connolly Park, answered the door around noon last Friday to a person purporting to be from the ESB.
According to Gardaí the culprit managed to gained access under the pretence of checking her wires.
He is said to have distracted her and a large sum of money, which she was saving for the Christmas period, was taken.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the Connolly Park area, who may have seen anything between 12 and 1pm last Friday, to contact them.
Speaking on the Talkabout programme, Garda Marcus Twomey said this was a particularly horrible crime which targeted the elderly.
He said aside from the theft a large sum of money, this sort of crime undermines the peace of mind of the elderly person, in their own home.
