« Back€220,000 spent on breakfast clubs in Kerry in last academic year

€220,000 was spent on breakfast clubs in Kerry during the last academic year.

The school meals programme provides regular, nutritious food to children who are unable, due to lack of good quality food, to take full advantage of the education provided to them.

In response to TD Mattie McGrath’s parliamentary question, Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, gave details on the school breakfast clubs currently being supported by his department.

Funding was provided for approximately 700 breakfast clubs benefitting 78,000 children at a total cost of just under €7 million.

During the academic year 2015/16, €219, 655 was spent on breakfast clubs in Kerry, while Dublin received the largest allocation at over €2.4 million, and Clare received the smallest amount at just over €52,000.

There has been a marked increase in the funding provided for breakfast clubs in the programme, with an increase of over 50% in the level of funding in respect of claims for the 2015/2016 school year compared to the previous year.
