Dog foul on the streets is one of the biggest scourges in  towns and villages.

That’s according to Sinn Féin Councillor Robert Beasley, who brought the motion to the monthly meeting of the Listowel Municipal District.

Councillor Beasley says while there are facilities in place for the cleaning up of dog litter, dog owners are dumping the bags and scoopers once they are used.

He adds there should be a policy of educating dog owners over the effects of dog fouling, regarding tourism and social aspects.

In response, the council says 26 special dog foul patrols were carried out by the litter warden in 2015, but says the assistance of residents is required to catch dog owners who are not acting responsibly.
