The department responsible for Killarney House has refused to comment on reports that paintings and other artefacts stolen from the historic building are to be returned shortly.
It’s understood that gardaí have recovered half a million euro of the artefacts which were stolen shortly after they were placed in storage by the Office of Public Works in Limerick in 1999.
Thirty nine items were taken including 26 paintings.
In 2012, a man was arrested after two paintings that were due to be auctioned were recognised by civil servants as being among the items that’d been placed in private storage.
The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht says it can’t comment on any on-going garda investigation.
It’s hoped Killarney House will open to the public this summer.
