The Department of Transport has issued a marine notice ordering boats to give Skellig Michael ‘a wide berth’ in the coming weeks while the new Star Wars film is being shot on the island.
The department’s marine notice said the shooting was due to take place between 5am this Monday and 7pm on Friday next.
According to the Irish Examiner, it appears the order does not amount to the exclusion zone which was established when there was filming on the island last year.
The notice says vessels are requested to give the island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a wide berth during the filming.
It goes on to say that vessel masters and skippers are reminded to comply with the requirements of the international regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea.
Cathaoirleach of South and West Kerry, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen says the initial inconvenience will be balanced by the huge boost, he says, the area will receive from the filming.
