Deloitte has been appointed to carry out a governance review of a Kerry-based charity for sick children.
Radio Kerry News has learned that the Saoirse Foundation has appointed the auditing and accountancy firm to carry out the review of its organisation.
Deloitte has asked to meet four former directors who resigned from the board of the charity citing governance issues.
Radio Kerry’s also learned that the HSE is running the day-to-day operations of the charity’s ambulance service.
The Bumbleance service had been operated by a private ambulance company, Lifeline, but this contract ended last Friday.
Lifeline’s managing director David Hall is a former director of the Saoirse Foundation.
Four directors of the Saoirse Foundation resigned from the board of the charity earlier this year citing governance issues.
A complaint was made to the Charities Regulatory Authority which is looking into the matter.
One of those who resigned, David Hall, said when he was on the board he wasn’t told how much was raised from a charity event, the Bumbleance Megapush, and that the event’s organisers got ‘conflicting’ figures from the organisation as to how much was raised.
The Saoirse Foundation’s CEO, Tony Heffernan, says any alleged discrepancy of funds is completely inaccurate.
David Hall says there’s no CCTV footage to back up reports of a theft from the charity’s ambulance at last year’s Ploughing Championships, Tony Heffernan says the theft took place.
Mr Heffernan says allegations of financial irregularities are completely inaccurate and he’s always fully supported a governance review.
The charity’s contract with Mr Hall’s company to run the Bumbleance service ended last Friday and the HSE is now running its ambulance service for sick children.
Tony Heffernan declined to comment on this and the appointment of Deloitte.
The HSE said there were talks about it running the Bumbleance service but these were at a very early stage.
But when asked about the charity’s contract with Lifeline coming to an end, the HSE made no further comment.
