The death has taken place of former Kerry County Councillor James Courtney.
A native of Castlegregory, the 94-year-old first stood in the 1955 local elections as a candidate for Clann na Talmhan in the Tralee Electoral Area.
He was first elected to Kerry County Council in 1960, as an Independent.
He continued to serve as an Independent on the Council without a breach, until he stepped down at the 1999 local elections, having represented the Mid-Kerry Electoral Area from 1985 to 1991.
Mr Courtney was the ‘Father of the Council’ at the centenary celebrations marking the formation of Kerry County Council in 1999.
He will repose at Lynch’s funeral home Castlegregory tomorrow evening from 5pm to 8pm.
Requiem Mass will be held on Friday at St Mary’s Church, Castlegregory at 12 noon.
