« BackCouncillor wants to introduce CCTV scheme to prevent rural crime in Kerry

A Fianna Fail Councillor has called on Kerry County Council to introduce a community led CCTV scheme to prevent rural crime.

Councillor Michael Cahill proposed the motion at last Friday’s meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District.

Mr Cahill said a similar type scheme has proven to be hugely successful in Laois with amazing results.

A Pilot CCTV Scheme was launched earlier in the year in Durrow Co. Laois involving up to forty camera’s spread across various locations in the Dunmore/Durrow area monitoring up to 150 homes.

It was the first of its kind to be rolled out in the country at a cost in the region of 80,000 euro, including a 50,000 euro allocation from the Department of the Environment.
